Denis Rioux explore le photographique comme forme distincte d’appropriation et de représentation, ainsi que la nature de l’expérience qu’elle met en œuvre. Dans sa pratique, la photographie est un opérateur à penser l’espace, la visibilité et la matérialité, en dehors d’un référent ou de ce qui permet de nommer les choses. Elle est aussi déterminée par sa propre spatialité et temporalité, qui trouvent notamment leurs fondements dans un art descriptif. Ses œuvres rendent compte d’une expérience singulière du saisissement dans la lumière et de l’apparaître des choses, ou encore de la manière particulière et autonomisante qu’elles ont de se tenir ou d’être là. Elles sont à considérer comme l’expression à la fois fragile et aporétique d’un double saisissement (je suis saisi par la chose vue que je saisis par la photographie), ou comme un regard posé sur la minceur des choses et du concret dans l’expérience du visible.

Le parcours artistique de Denis Rioux s’échelonne sur plus de vingt ans et concerne principalement le médium photographique. Ses œuvres ont été présentées dans le cadre de plusieurs expositions au Québec, au Canada et ailleurs dans le monde, notamment à la galerie Laroche-Joncas à Montréal, à l’Espace F à Matane, où il a présenté en 2022 une rétrospective de son travail, et à la galerie SIM Reykjavik où il a été invité pour une résidence de création à l’été 2012. Il a participé à plusieurs foires d’arts à Montréal et à Toronto. Il est titulaire d’un doctorat en études et pratique des arts de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM, 2018) et récipiendaire de plusieurs bourses (FQRSC, CALQ). Il vit et travaille à Montréal.

Denis Rioux is interested in the photographic as a means to acknowledge and represent the complexity of our relationship to the world, and also in the specificity of the experience it involves. In his practice, photography is a thought generator and a source of discovery. His photographs are to be considered as an expression of the fragility and thickness of things and the concrete in our everyday visual experiences. In his research and creative projects, he works on a definition of the “photographic” and its specificity as a model for thinking and forms of representation, and as modes of appropriation of the complexity of the world. In his research, the “photographic” is determined by its own spatiality and is considered to be rooted in a descriptive art.

Denis Rioux's artistic career spans more than twenty years and is mainly concerned with the photographic medium. His work has been presented in several exhibitions in Quebec, Canada and elsewhere in the world, notably at the Laroche-Joncas gallery in Montreal, at Espace F in Matane, where he presented a retrospective of his work in 2022, and at the SIM Reykjavik gallery where he was invited for a creative residency in the summer of 2012. He has participated in several art fairs in Montreal and Toronto. He holds a PhD in art studies and practice from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM, 2018) and is the recipient of several grants (FQRSC, CALQ). He lives and works in Montreal.
